Call for Papers: Focused Issue “Spatial Patterns in Cancer Epidemiology”

Published: 2018-12-11

Submission deadline: 30 September, 2019

Scope of the Focused Issue

There is a long history of studies showing that where you live matters. This can relate to health, economics or life style. It is no different with cancer. With the increases in innovative spatial modelling techniques, visualizations and data availability at the small area level, there are more opportunities to understand the extent of how the cancer burden depends on where people live.

This special edition of the Annals of Cancer Epidemiology (ACE) is designed to include papers that either:

  • (a)provide a review of current knowledge about geographical variations in a cancer-related outcome;
  • (b) provide new data that quantifies the extent and patterns of geographical patterns in a cancer-related outcome;
  •      or
  • (c) provides insights into novel statistical, geospatial or visualisation techniques that can be used to examine geographical patterns in cancer-related outcomes.

Preference will be given to papers that describe geographical variation within countries, in particular the role of remoteness and area-level socioeconomic disadvantage, rather than comparing country-specific estimates.

It is hoped that the papers published in this Focused Issue will motivate efforts to better understand why the geographical variations in cancer epidemiology exist and then, ultimately, to inform the design of interventions to reduce that variation.

Annals of Cancer Epidemiology
The Annals of Cancer Epidemiology (Ann Cancer Epidemiol; ACE; ISSN: 2616-4213) is a new international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal that started in August 2017 (https://ace.amegroups.org/).

Its Editors include:
Dr Freddie Bray, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
Professor Ahmedin Jemal, American Cancer Society
Professor Wanqing Chen, National (Chinese) Cancer Centre.

The journal has a goal to help humans apply epidemiological studies to fight against cancers by providing an open-access platform and user-friendly facilities to worldwide cancer researchers, clinicians, scientists and policy makers, and shape effective communication and collaboration amongst them.
